Information Architecture
Information Architecture (also referred to as IA) is defined by the Information Architecture Institute as "the art and science of organizing and labeling websites, intranets, online communities and software to support usability." For a website project, this overlaps significantly with design, user experience (Ux), content creation, and analytics.
A decade ago, the websites we built were usually brochureware: a homepage, followed by four or five daughter pages, one labeled "about us", one labeled "contact us", and so on. Information architecture was generally not a concern; the content of these pages was limited enough in scope that the organization was instinctive.
These days, websites contain vast amounts of information, which evolves rapidly. Organizing this information requires conscious effort and a deep understanding of the site's user audience in order to identify content requirements, organize created content, and make content easily and intuitively available to site visitors.
We offer consulting on information architecture as a standard part of all of our website design / development projects, depending on the client's needs. We can also bring in an IA specialist for larger or more complex projects.
